| 内容記述 | In dealing with climate change issue, developing and developed countries are in serious conflicts on the responsibility and the target for carbon emissions reduction. This dispute has induced some theoretical issues. Firstly, what sort of relationship exists between income inequality and carbon emissions? Secondly, does economic disparity between developing countries and developed countries matter carbon emissions? Thirdly, do developing countries have capability to cut off carbon emissions in the process of industrialization? This paper will study the above issues by focusing on the effects of income disparity on CO2 emissions using cross-country panel data of 101 countries over the period 1960 to 2005. Our main findings are that: (1) there exists an inverted-U relationship between CO2 emissions per capita and income per capita in total sample countries and high-income countries but not yet in low income countries. (2) Cross-country income inequality has negative impact on carbon emissions at average level. (3) Any efforts of low income countries aimed at catch-uping with rich countries may induce higher carbon emission because of their higher marginal emissions propensity (MEP) due to lower efficiency of energy using and the lack of technology. Therefore, while demanding developing countries for more carbon emissions reduction, developed countries have need to help developing countries to improve their capability of reducing carbon emissions by providing technological transfer and carbon financing. | |||||
