In primary school curriculum of \"Gakusei\", which was much influenced by primary school curriculum in foreign educational system in those days. \"Book-keeping\" had leagally been set in upper primary school and middle school curriculum as a general education, though \"book-keeping\" is now generally considered as a vocational subject, not a general subject. Primary school curriculum in early \"Gakusei\" period (from Meiji 5 to Meiji 9) had not fitted at all for general public who really needed such skills for their daily life, and it had been inferior to traditional teaching; \"Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic\" in \"Terakoya\" (literally temple school for general public in late \"Edo-era, though they were not generally managed by temples) and so its curriculum had to be improved to be more simple and practical for general public. In such circumstances, \"book-keeping\" was recognized as a practical subject needed for such skills of making a table, keeping books and calculating, as such skills were necessary for primary school pupils who went into business or keep house after leaving school. Then pratical subject, \"book-keeping\", consisted of two fields; single-entry book-keeping, and double-entry book-keeping. So it was single-entry book-keeping, not double-entry book-keeping that was int roduced and set into upper primary school curriculum, because the latter was too difficult for primary school pupils to understand, and the former was considered to be approriate for upper primary school curriculum to be set into. Of all subjects in upper primary school curriculum, \"book-keeping\" was not an independent subject at first, but it had been taught in other general subjects needed for daily life such as arithmetic, composition, and calligraphy.
