| 内容記述 | This paper aims to reconsider the position of the Bank of Amsterdam (Wisselbank) in the international financial markets during the eighteenth century. For this purpose, we clarify the tendency of settlement by Hope & Co. in the bank, by analyzing the bank's account books. According to previous studies. the Bank of Amsterdam seems to have a negligible role in the financial market because it neither issued notes nor operated as a bill broking. However, we should not underestimate the efficient clearing function of the bank and should consider the formation of a multilateral payment mechanism in Europe. Amsterdam's merchant bankers held accounts in the bank; after the mid-seventeenth century, they provided widely accept credit suitable for world trade. Bills of exchange flexibly drawn on the Bank of Amsterdam placed the city as a center for international payments. An analysis of the bank's account books revealed that Hope & Co. frequently moved large funds along with other merchant bankers. This tendency of settlement by Hope & Co. suggests that the Bank of Amsterdam played a role for the foundation of their business in the eighteenth century. | |||||
