According to Batton (2000), a professional numismatist brought an early birch bark manuscript to her studio for consultation in the fall of 1998. It then turned out to be a Gilgit-Bamiyan manuscript of the text well corresponding to Chinese versions of the sūtra of the Uṣṇīṣavijayā Dhāraṇī, which narrates an episode relating the circumstances that led the Buddha to teach the dhāraṇī. At present, MIHO museum at Shiga Prefecture, Japan holds this manuscript. This episode had been available only in Chinese and Tibetan translations until the finding of this Gilgit-Bamiyan manuscript. Melzer (2007) has already provisionally transliterated and edited the manuscript. As she shows, it has been damaged and many portions of it are missing. To fill the gaps, this article presents parallel passages found in other Sanskrit Buddhist texts.
