In order to analyze the process in detail, it is required, we decided on the bases of our previous findings, to use an interview method. One hundred and six female undergraduates served as Ss. They were given 8 sets of stimulus, each of which is composed of two personality traits, and asked to rate the desirability of traits and SP represented on 21- and 23- points-scales. Completing the ratings, they were asked to answer the following questions : 1) Why did they make the ratings on the particular points? 2) Why did they make corrections, if any, of the ratings? 3) Which trait did they make more of in the SP-rating? 4) Did they add any traits to SP, besides the two given? 5) Did SP remind them of a real person? 6) Did the denotation of each trait change when presented in a set from when presented alone? 7) Was it easy or difficult to make an image of SP in mind? Ss were also asked to rate the degree of relatedness of the two traits. The independent variables in the present research were as follows : 1) the desirability of the traits composing the sets, 2) the difference of the desirabilities between the two traits, and 3) correlation between rating values of the two. Five measures derived from the data other than the desirability ratings were treated as the so-called intervening variables. The dependent variable was the relationship among the three rating values in the set. Eight response sets were discriminated : the additive, the quasi-additive, the reducing, the quasi-reducing, the concurrent, the intermediate, and the non-intermediate. A discriminant analysis was carried out using Hayashi\u0027s Method of Quantification, No. II. The outer criterion was the eight rerponse sets, and the accounting variables were three measures of the independent variable and five measures of the intervening variable. The obtained correlation ratio did not exceed. 4. We analyzed, then, the relationships among various measures using a more primitive method : by means of contingency tables. As interesting enough, it was found that the reducing and the quasi-reducing response sets, which could not be explained rationally by any linear models, appeared as much as 12 percents of all. The fact suggests, we believe, that the very process of personality impression formation might be approached from the Gestalt standpoint rather than from the mosaic standpoint.
