In the increasingly knowledge-based society that includes the rapid advances in AI technology, plus Japan’s aging society, in which 100-year longevity is not so uncommon, life-long learning will increasingly come to be expected, even after school, college or university graduation. University extension centers could offer a role as a specialized, organizational area responsible for the “re-education of the workforce.” Contrary to this notion, recent policies and research have limited the possibilities of extension centers and their potential for guiding and re-organizing this growing public need. This paper uses accumulated research on extension center work in diverse locations to create a framework to better analyze the role of Japanese university extension centers. By doing so it is hoped that a workable agenda for future centers may be realized. The findings of this study are threefold. First, the research summarizes the accumulation of extension center research from universities in the United Kingdom and the United States that have influenced the development of Japanese university extension activities. Second, the research notes that historical research of Japanese extension centers is less extensive than that of university extensions, with the exception of a few studies of Waseda University's Off-Campus Education Department. Third, an analysis of extension center research kept at Japanese universities (with the exception of historical research) is undertaken, although most of these studies either focus on the trends in Japan as a whole or analyze the efforts of individual universities, which has been pointed out in previous studies. Based on the above-mentioned trends and issues, future research issues in need of addressing include the transformation and the “extension” of the role of extension centers that could be utilized in the changing social environment that surrounds Japan’s many universities.
en
Abstract"}]}, "item_9_identifier_registration":
"item_9_publisher_32":
"item_9_source_id_7":

["323/350/957/1622161106743
["大学におけるエクステンション・センター研究の動向と課題
内容記述 This paper summarizes the trends of previous research done on extension centers in universities and offers further research questions to be addressed. In the increasingly knowledge-based society that includes the rapid advances in AI technology, plus Japan’s aging society, in which 100-year longevity is not so uncommon, life-long learning will increasingly come to be expected, even after school, college or university graduation.
