内容記述 The recent school management reform in Japan, with respect to school office, is capturing people’s interests. This paper aims to investigate the school organization and the duties pertaining to school office work in South Korea and provide a perspective to strengthen the ongoing discussions over the school management reform in Japan. It further analyzes government documents and school duties tables and explores the characteristics of school office work in South Korea, comparing the composition of school organizations and contents of school office works in Japan. By drawing a comparison between the school organizations of Japanese and South Korean schools, we found that the schools in South Korea set up departments to take care of specific curriculums and education policy reforms in the same way Japanese schools did. However, the major difference between the school organizations of the two countries is that the department of management and public relations is not a part of the school affairs section in South Korea. In South Korea, the “administrative office” is in charge of these duties. The administrative offices of South Korean schools have more office workers than those of Japanese schools. Administrative officers perform many duties, which include appointment and dismissal of teachers and staff and welfare and financial work. This is due to the institutional differences between the two countries, such as the large amount of discretion and financial scale each school has. The number of office workers in South Korean schools is more than that of workers in Japanese schools because of the availability of more opportunities in the accounts departments of Japanese schools. In addition to the administrative officers, there are several support staff members in South Korean schools. They are assigned the responsibility of supporting the teachers and administrative officers in fulfilling their duties and are in-charge of work related to registration of school and procurement of textbooks. Additionally, they are in charge of contacting parents, which reduces the work load of the teachers and administrative officers. The findings of the study revealed that the South Korean schools have an extensive budget and their administrative offices take part in a wide range of financial affairs. Furthermore, it was found that the South Korean schools have multiple staff members who support teachers and administrative officers and play an important role in school management affairs.
