内容記述 | “Feishan,” a Chinese folk guardian god, is widely worshiped in some parts of Southern China. Previous historical studies have considered the Feishan faith to be the ancestral god of the Yang surname group (or the Yang lineage) and mainly related to the historical Han Chinese figure known as “Yang Zaisi,” who was said to be the famous local leader of Jingzhou in the Qushui River basin during the Tang and Song dynasties. However, a field investigation conducted in the Guangxi and Hunan province borderlands found that Feishan believers are not limited to the Yang surname group as other surname groups also worship Feishan and have built temples of sacrifice to him. Further, not all worshippers believe that there is an inevitable relationship between Feishan and Yang-Zaisi. Because of the syncretism with local folk beliefs, in most cases, it has been difficult to clarify the kinds of gods enshrined in each specific Feishan temple as they are seen as ancestral gods, guardian gods, or gods of the land. This situation is similar to the worship by surname groups of Ujigami, the Japanese tutelary (or guardian god), which was gradually syncretized with other folk beliefs and has undergone significant changes since the Middle Ages. Therefore, this study attempted to re-examine the worship of Feishan in Southern China from a new perspective using case studies in several Dong villages. | |||||||||
