| 内容記述 | This study aims to clarify differences between two reformulation markers, yejiushishuo in Chinese and tsumari in Japanese, from the perspective of their conjunctive function. Previous studies on these two reformulation markers give specific and detailed descriptions of the characteristics of these two markers. According to previous studies, these two reformulation markers are both used to signal that the following clause is an interpretation, conclusion, or clarification of the information given in the preceding clause. However, these studies cannot avoid being necessarily narrow in their view and fail to provide a global picture of the two reformulation markers. Even though these two reformulation markers seemingly share a lot in common, they are found to be fundamentally distinctive from each other. Such difference seems unlikely to be captured by existing approaches. Besides, there appears to be no contrastive study yet found on these two or any other reformulation markers between Japanese and Chinese. Thus, in this study, I take a contrastive linguistic perspective and compare the context to which these two reformulation markers are applied. In order to do so, I adopt the clause-relational approach (Winter 1994; Hoey 1983) to examine the relations of the clauses connected by these two reformulation markers. This approach, bearing a larger semantic scope, enables us to scrutinize the relations between clauses, connected by reformulation markers, from a broader semantic perspective on the one hand and make it manageable to compare how they differ from each other on the other. It is found that yejiushishuo in Chinese and tsumari in Japanese are both used to connect clauses with strong matching compatibility relations. However, yejiushishuo in Chinese can only be used to conjoin clauses with strong matching compatibility, while tsumari in Japanese is found to be much versatile in combining clauses with weak matching compatibility or even matching incompatibility. | |||||||||
