The meanings of “-teiru” studied here, are “progressive” and “resultative” which are known as basic aspectual meanings of it, and “resultative”, “perfect”, and “simple state” which are known as derivative meanings of it that are used more frequently than the other meanings such as “counter fact”, “experience” etc. Similar studies, specially about Chinese or Korean-speaking learners have been done so far. But this paper would be one of the first studies of this kind, on Persian - speaking learners, looking at Persian grammatical forms correspond to every function of “ -teiru”, and possible native language. After comparing different meanings of “-teiru” with the corresponding Persian grammatical forms, this study focuses on acceptance of every meaning of it by four groups of students (from first -year students to fourth-year students), in present form “-teiru” and past form “-teita”. Comparing the results with native speakers’ acceptance data, shows that the present “progressive” meaning of “ -teiru” is the easiest meaning to understand for Persian-speaking learners, as mentioned in prior researches on other learners with different native languages. In contrast, in realization and acceptance of other meanings, such as past form of “repetitive”, “resultative” and “perfect” meanings, clear differences ha ve been observed between students and native speakers. Particularly, aspectual differences of “repetitive” and “perfect” meanings of “-teiru” with the corresponding Persian forms leads to a large decrease in acceptance of “-teiru” form compared to native speakers. In some cases, although learners understood the correct aspectual meaning of the sentence, they tend to use Japanese “ ta” form instead of “-teiru”. Furthermore, learners have difficulties in distinction between “ ru” and “-teiru” in present “repetitive”, and between “ta” and “-teiru” in present “resultative” meanings.
