Objective: Recently people are concerned about the quality of life (QOL) in elderly. Both physical health and mental health, which may in fluence each other, are essential to improvement and keeping of QOL. To assess the interaction, we investigated physical strengths and cerebral functions in elderly people. Methods: One hundred and fifly-five elderly free-living women participated in this study. Physical strengths were estimated by measuring strength or quadriceps and hand-grip muscle groups, vertical jump capacity, body softness, time for standing up and sitting down, speed of key-tapping, and reaction time against lighting. The general aptitude test for occupation by Japan Labor Ministry was used for the estimation of cerebral functions such as skill with fingers, hands and arms, recognition of figures, judgment of space, recognition of noun, ability of language. and intellectual ability. Results: Hand-grip, vertical jump capacity, body softness. and tapping score were significantly decreased with aging. Time for standing up and silting down, reaction time against lighting were significantly delayed with aging. Skill with fingers, hands and arms, recognition of noun, ability of language. and intellectual ability were significantly decreased with aging. Physical strength correlated significantly with cerebral functions in most of their combinations. Some of these significance were maintained after adjusting by age. Conclusions: Physical strengths and cerebral functions were closely associated. The possibility remains lhal decrease of cerebral functions with aging would be controlled with improvement of physical strengths by physical training. |
