内容記述 In its report of 1999, the Japanese government’s Central Council for Education suggested that career education should be implemented from elementary school stage according to an individual’s developmental stages. However, career education in elementary schools has not been promoted to the degree that it has in junior and senior high schools, and thus has not been the subject of much academic research. The purpose of this study is to review the development of elementary school career education, to identify trends in research on this subject through a literature review, and to clarify research issues that might enhance future career education efforts. First, a discussion of the development of elementary school career education since the 1999 report to the present was undertaken. To identify trends in research focused on elementary school career education, previous academic studies will be discussed and classified. This research found very few studies on career education in elementary schools been published in Japanese academic journals. A search of the Japan Association for Career Education (formerly the Japan Association for Career Guidance) using the keywords elementary school (elementary school) and career education yielded zero results. Next, we searched for “elementary school students” and “career” in the journal of the Society for Special Activities, which conducts research on special activities considered the cornerstone of career education to find only one search result. However, this did not explore any notion of children’s transformation because of this practice. Furthermore, a search for articles using the key words “elementary school” and “career” in titles yielded eighteen articles, although a close examination of the contents revealed that only two articles were published in Engineering Education and one article in School Education Research related to career education practices for elementary schools. In addition, only thirteen cases with this topic have been published in university bulletins. Categorizing showed that only six papers report or introduce the practices, and only two papers even identify the effects of learning based on the analysis of the practices. In other words, few studies have clarified the effectiveness of career education in any concrete way. Even if we broaden the scope to some general education journals other than academic journals, we can find many articles and reports of practice that discuss the significance and potential of career education, but still, find very few studies that clarify the effects of practice-based learning. Considering the above, an increase in practical and empirical research targeting elementary school career education is desirable. There is a need for research that will identify how learners learn as well as how the outcomes of career education are relevant to a child’s future.
