Then this species was rightly regarded to be closely related to the phlebobranchian family Ascidiidae, but distinguished from it mainly by the asexual reproduction seen only in the former. This difference was once thought by the present author not to merit a new family because colonial forms occurred even in other phlebobranchian families Octacnemidae and Corellidae whose constituents are mostly simple. His view has, however, been corrected by the recently revealed fact that P. elongata, and a simple ascidian Microgastra granosa (Sluiter, 1904) redefined by Kott (1985), one of its junior synonyms represented by Ascidia(?) aenigmatica Nishikawa, 1986, share with each other the feature that the neural complex, gonad and heart are found apart from the mantle body proper and embedded completely in the test. This characteristic seemed unique among Ascidiacea, and therefore, Plurellidae comprising these two species was considered a good family.
