| 内容記述 | Novels depicting care have focused on childcare and the care of the elderly and disabled, but only recently has attention increased to “a child who routinely performs household chores and takes care of family members,” which are assumed to be the responsibility of adults. In Japan, attention to these “young carers” has finally increased, and the first national survey of young carers was conducted in 2021. Reflecting this social situation, young carer novels appeared in 2022 and 2023 that show two main trends. The first is a group of novels depicting the inner lives of young carers in singular narratives. The other is novels that depict the relationships among several young carer characters and their adult lives after they leave their families in plural narratives. This paper focuses on three novels published in 2022 that depict the inner lives of young carers with difficulties in singular narratives: Hiroka Yamashita’s Akutee (Abusive language), Yuka Kamimura’s Sukuwaretenjaneyo (Are you being saved?), and Rin Usami’s Kuruma no Musume (Girl in car), and points out five points common to the three novels. First, female adults, such as mothers and grandmothers, are the objects of care. Second, the mothers have been displaced from their “parental” place and have become “children.” Third, the situation is portrayed as unchanging. Fourth, liberation from care is not chosen. Fifth, a “margin” is created for this purpose. These margins allow them to create their own space in their difficult lives and maintain their family life. The most important thing for the protagonist girls is to support and maintain their family. In this case, care may be evaluated negatively because they are responsible for the care that should normally be taken by adults. However, care is inevitably important to these girl’s lives. These novels do not offer solutions to the difficulties faced by young carers, but are stories that make the young carers visible and present their significance. | |||||||||
