When an educational model such as 特別活動 tokubetsu katsudo (tokkatsu) is taken abroad, the practice is unlikely to be replicated; rather, it is reinterpreted against new cultural and social backgrounds. Although the notion of tokkatsu is secular, it is practiced in association with Islamic religious education in Muslim countries such as Egypt, Malaysia, and Indonesia. In this way, the recontextualization of pedagogic practice occurs; its meaning is reinterpreted against the local contexts (Kusanagi, 2022). For this reason, in this research, I distinguish the practices abroad of tokkatsu as separate from the tokubetsu katsudo practiced within Japanese schools. The concept of a whole child pedagogy is at the heart of tokubetsu katsudo, even though it is often misconceived as merely a type of educational activity such as school cleaning or school lunch. The term “pedagogy” should not be restricted to teaching or academic learning; it encompasses a holistic understanding of the child, one that envisions the child’s human development, as well as how a caring relationship is created between teacher and student, as well as among peers. In the context of current educational reforms, schools are expected to produce short-term results. This makes it difficult for teachers to engage in the long-term, holistic educational activities inherent in the pedagogy or tokubetsu katsudo. Based on this issue, this study analyzes how tokkatsu practice attempts to embed child-centered pedagogy into daily activities in Malaysian schools. A unique feature of the examined project is that it did not introduce the educational model as the best practice. Rather than imposing a particular model as universal and in a top-down way, an alternative approach was developed. Researchers and practitioners from Malaysia, Japan, and Indonesia engaged in continuous dialogues on an online platform. Through discussions on whole-child pedagogy, each country independently designed and implemented its activities. This article details how tokkatsu in Malaysia was adopted to embed 21st-century skills into daily practice whilst overcoming the challenges faced in a post-pandemic period. Tokkatsu also worked to facilitate the contextualization of religious values into daily educational activities as it encouraged students to act as responsible members of the school community. The teachers believed that its empathetic and humanistic approach helped to build caring relationships in the classrooms. One unique feature of tokkatsu in Malaysia is that it was also introduced as a student-centered pedagogy for subject learning.
