In the literature of adolescent psychology, we can seldom find studies concerning the developmental processes of social attitudes. To investigate the developmental processes of social attitudes of adolescents, it is required to analyze the longitudinal material obtained from the same subjects. We have undertaken such a study. In this study, we intend to examine the longitudinal data over four years. The social attitudes, for the present study, are conceptualized as conservative, radical and mass-social attitudes. The results derived from the longitudinal data are complemented by interview with some subjects. The purposes of this study are to indicate what the facts of social attitudes are, whether or not the social attitudes change during the lower and upper secondary school days, if they change, which of them change, and what factors make social attitudes change. The longitudinal data are obtained by administering a questionnaire to the same subjects once a year, totally four times. The subjects are boys and girls in the attached upper and lower secondary school of Nagoya University. The data analyzed here are a part of a larger set of data we have already collected. The data analyzed are those of the groups which are given the same questionnaire four times from first grade of lower secondary school through first grade of the upper and from third grade of the lower through third grade of the upper. The research was carried out in the school years 1972 through 1976. The number of the subjects is shown in Table 1. The interviewees were chosen from boys and girls of third grade in the attached upper and lower secondary school. They have been given the questionnaire four times since second grade of the lower secondary school. Ten boys and girls were selected from among those whose attitudes did not fluctuate but either changed to a certain degree or were stable. The interviewers were 7 graduate students in the department of educational psychology of Nagoya University. The interview was carried out toward the end of January, 1977 at the attached upper secondary school. The results obtained are the following : A. The results based on the analysis of the longitudinal data : 1) The mean scores of radical scale are higher than those of other two scales (Table 3 and 4). 2) The mean scores of mass-social scale tend to be higher with increasing age, especially in boys (Table 3 and 4). 3) The inter-occasion correlation coefficients for mass-social scale are significantly high in boys and girls. In girls, those for the other two scales, conservative and radical, are also significantly high (Table 5 and 6). 4) The fluctuation of each attitude score is small in boys and girls, judging from the mean scores and the distributions of variation scores. Girls show still smaller fluctuation (Table 7,8,9 and 10). B. The results based on the data by interview : 1) The subjects\u0027 understandings of the adults\u0027 world and their ideas of social participation obtained by interview seem to be related to the results of both the longitudinal research for social attitudes and the questionnaire of values obtained at third grade of the upper secondary school. 2) Most of the subjects answered that it was in the lower secondary school days that they make clear their understanding of the adults\u0027 world. 3) As the effective factors for understanding the adults\u0027 world and changing the contents of their understanding, subjects referred to educational and vocational choices, school environments, peer relations, political and social problems, and personal experiences.", 内容記述 How are the social attitudes of adolescents formed? In the literature of adolescent psychology, we can seldom find studies concerning the developmental processes of social attitudes.
