Kintsch and his co-researchers suggested that when we read the story, phrases or sentences were parsed and transformed into micro-propositions, which were organized into higher-order units by macro-rule and the help of a story schema. Then those units were labelled, and resulted in hierarchical macro-structure. When asked to recall, the subjects use those macro-structure as a retrieval cue, when asked to summarize, they base directly upon the macro-structure. On the other hand, Thorndyke proposed story grammar to generate a representation of a story in a hierarchical structure that has intermediate nodes as abstract structure elements of the plot and as terminal nodes actual propositions of the story. The higher the organizational story elements, the more tend to appear in recall and summary protocol. In our experiments, subjects read the stories either presented in natural order or with their propositions in Plot scrambled. Three kinds of performance, i. e., recall, summary, and importance ratings were considered first as a function of levels in hierarchy by Thorndyke\u0027s rule. However, the dominance of propositions assigned to top-level nodes was not confirmed. The other determinants of levels in hierarchy, i. e., relational density which produced through subjective grouping of propositions, or rated importance suggested that the performance was effected by the interaction between story structure and its content. 内容記述 | Two main theories concerning story comprehension were discussed. Kintsch and his co-researchers suggested that when we read the story, phrases or sentences were parsed and transformed into micro-propositions, which were organized into higher-order units by macro-rule and the help of a story schema. Then those units were labelled, and resulted in hierarchical macro-structure. When asked to recall, the subjects use those macro-structure as a retrieval cue, when asked to summarize, they base directly upon the macro-structure. On the other hand, Thorndyke proposed story grammar to generate a representation of a story in a hierarchical structure that has intermediate nodes as abstract structure elements of the plot and as terminal nodes actual propositions of the story.
