Research has focused on newcomer elementary and junior high school students since the 1990s, but not senior high school students. One of the most important issues of newcomer students is their career development such as entering universities and finding employment. This paper applies the life history method in analyzing a life history of Mario, who is a newcomer Brazilian college student who graduated from a public high school in Japan. He came to Japan in April 2000 and enrolled in a junior high school as a third grader. After graduating from junior high school, he passed t he special exam for foreign students to enter senior high school. His career development can be classified in four stages as follows: (1) Before coming to Japan: Mario's Japanese Brazilian father gave him advice that studying in and out of the school was important in order to be a leader in a Brazilian society. Going to college seemed very natural for Mario, and he also learned Japanese for four months at the language school in Brazil. (2) Junior high school student: Few foreign students attended Mario's junior high school, and Mario spent time at school only with Japanese friends. Although he struggled with the differences of school culture between Brazil and Japan, he eventually got over the difficulties through support from teachers and classmates. (3) Senior high school student: Although there were some newcomer students in his senior high school, Mario spent his time with Japanese friends instead of newcomers. Accepting advice from teachers and his family, Mario decided to take an entrance examination to enter university and did not join a group for students who were planning to seek employment after graduating from high school. He studied hard for six months to prepare for the entrance exarn. (4) University student: He was accepted to a private university, where he has been treated no differently than Japanese students, which means he has to take all of the same required credits. Mario is planning to go to a graduate school in the US or Australia to study International Studies in order to pursue a future career at the United Nations. He has been gathering information on graduate schools and their admission processes. He is looking at pursuing an international career. Mario's case is different from other newcomer students' careers that researchers have studied. He is more determined to pursue his education than make money. As this study shows, he is looking to expand his career globally.
