内容記述 | The ba-conditional sentence concerns “hypothetical condition,” whose meaning can be expressed as “if P holds, then Q consequently holds” (where P and Q stand for propositional contents). This meaning pattern is primarily detected in complex sentences invol ving the baconditional clause. For such complex sentences, the matrix predicate tends to be in affirmative form and mean “something desirable.” On the other hand, for complex sentences with the nakerebaclause, the matrix predicate tends to be in negative form and mean something negative. In particular, in cases where the speaker’s “evaluation” is expressed with the use of the matrix predicate in “negative form” or with the use of the matrix predicate which conveys a negative meaning, the sentences acquire a deontic meaning. As the degree of deontic meaning lexically encoded is high (e.g., in the order of the nakereba-clause, the class of nakerebanaranai, and the sentence-final use of nakya), a stronger tendency is observed where the sentence contains a predicate denoting a “volitional act.” We claim that the use of a suffix meaning “volitional act,” to be attached to a verb, serves as a factor for yielding fixed expressions such as nakereba, nakerebanaranai, and (sentence-final) nakya, where the “deontic” aspect of meaning is foregrounded and the form turns into a functional word. | |||||
