内容記述 | Since the 1990s, researches on Japanese pornographic films of the 1960s and 1970s have become increasingly prevalent in the academic field of film history. Such interest can be attributed to the fact that these films attest to the dynamics of postwar Japan. Of the large number of Japanese pornographic films produced in the post-war period, special attention has been given to Nagisa Oshima’s In the Realm of the Senses (Ai no korida, 1976), which is distinguished by its hardcore representations of sex . In order to explicitly investigate the historical significance of In the Realm of the Senses, this research locates the film in the context of 1970s Japan, that is to say, in the discursive milieu critical of the dominant postwar political discourse known as “democracy based on national morality.” In other words, this paper approaches the explicit sexual imagery used throughout In the Realm of the Senses as Oshima’s cinematic method of rethinking “democracy.” In addition to the film text, I examine the discursive context surrounding the “In the Realm of the Senses trial” as well as the historical position of the film’s screening. Based on this examination, I analyze how we can comprehend the relationship between the trial and Oshima’s political stance. I ask, for example, to what extent self-reflections on democracy that the trial prompted was limited within the male-lead public sphere. For this inquiry, I turn to the court testimony by feminist Ryoko Ozawa which illustrates the negotiation of feminist arguments vis-à-vis the male-centric democratic discourse, before concluding that the female reception of In the Realm of the Senses was inspired at th at time by such negotiations. | |||||
