In this paper on "Tintern Abbey," investigation is made through two types of consciousness of time as seen in the poem. Both of these are highly, though not conspicuously, charged with the significance of the society and politics which was one of the poet's concerns around the time of its composition. And closely related with this bearing, they reflect the problematic growing of his self, that is to become the crucial poetic theme which Wordsworth grappled again and again in his life as a Romantic poet. The historical change of his attitude toward the French Revolution is well known. It was its violent progress, the execution of the French King and declarations of war with foreign nations, that drastically converted his evaluation of it from ardent hope to object despair. On 13th of July, 1798, he was not yet emancipated from the various ideological anxieties that were intrinsically rooted in the outbreak of the Revolution in 1789. In "Tintern Abbey," some of these tensions are perceived behind the two consciousnesses of time, one the poet's and the other his own sister's. The brother's consciousness is characterized by the successive progression of time which is reified in his insistence upon the continuity or unchangeableness of his self as "A worshipper of Nature." On the other hand, the poet deliniates his sister's consciousness as cyclical. In the future, whenever a psychically critical moment happens to her, she will remember, or return to, the unique past - the experience that she, with her brother, stood on the banks of the Wye and heard his "exhortations." And the consciousness of time concerning her corresponds genuinely to the sense of time which was shared by the first generation of the French Revolutionaries, that has its main point in their wish to return to ancient Rome. Then, in the poem, the presence of these consciousnesses, equivalent in value, reflects the conflict of the "reformist" Wordsworth who was confronted with the vicissitudes of the Revolution. While composing, he was reconsidering the authenticity of the event, still embarrasing because of his abiding incapacity for discerning the chief reason of its violent progress : whether "the Terror" had its origin in the ideas or philosophies which, he thought, had supported the Revolution when it occured, or it befell as an unpredictable happening without any relation to those ideas. In other words, towards the Revolution, he felt division within between the successive and causal movement of temporality and its intermittent progression, on which cyclical time is necessarily based. It is this mentality that is correspondent to these consciousnesses. The presence of two consciousnesses of time also reflects the problematic of Wordsworth's self in relation to time. We know that he began the Prelude soon after the writing of "Tintern Abbey." And later in that autobiographical poem, he would treat and integrate those consciousnesses : the cyclical which is to be represented in the spiritual action towards "the spots of time," and the successive to be retained as his purpose to recognize the growth of his continuous self which has no meaningless period. Then, it can be said that "Tintern Abbey" already had involved the problematic nature of the poet's self in time which would be taken up more seriously later. And, when we bear in mind his social and political significance towards the Revolution, which lies behind the two consciousnesses of time, his reconsideration of the self interconnected with his ideological reflection, then could be regarded as one important formative background for the poet.
en
Abstract"}]}, "item_9_publisher_32":
The society of english literature and linguistics Nagoya University
en"}]}, "item_9_select_15":
"item_9_source_id_7":

["2385
["フランス革命から9年後 : 「ティンターン・アベイ」における時間意識
内容記述 | Recently it becomes rather curious to regard William Wordsworth as a non-socio-political figure, even while he was composing his major poetry. In this paper on "Tintern Abbey," investigation is made through two types of consciousness of time as seen in the poem. Both of these are highly, though not conspicuously, charged with the significance of the society and politics which was one of the poet's concerns around the time of its composition.
