All nonionic surfactants considered here induced structural ordering of DMPC lipid bilayers, as we reported in a previous paper on DMPC/ethylene-glycol-ether binary bilayers. In particular, the degree of the ordering was highest for dodecanoic acid, followed by 1-dodecanol and dodecyl methyl ester. Both of the zwitterionic surfactants induced structural disordering of the DMPC lipid bilayers.
