内容記述 | This paper clarifies the failure of the linguistic approach in interpreting Descartes's cogito. Such an approach emerged in the latter half of the last century from analytic philosophy, or more largely speaking, from a modern philosophical paradigm shift often called the linguistic turn and shares an intention with these intellectual trends to reject the epistemological privilege of private introspection from the public perspective of language; this approach proposes a challenging new interpretation of the cogito that is totally free from introspection by reducing its indubitability to a kind of pragmatic feature of the sentences "I think" or "I am", namely, that these two sentences can never be uttered without being true. First, I review some principal examples of the interpretation, taking Ayer's work as its original sketch and Williams's and Hintikka's versions as its most sophisticated variations. Then, I indicate two main and general difficulties commonly faced by these attempts: (1) the prejudiced reliance on the validity of so-called logical truths and (2) the merely hypothetical character of the justification that they can give to the sentences "I think" or "I am" within the pragmatic framework mentioned above, although Descartes himself asserts both sentences categorically in his cogito formula. Finally, taking into consideration Frankfurt's interpretation which, though clearly aware of the second difficulty, continues to maintain the linguistic approach, I show exactly in what sense I regard this line of interpretation of the cogito as wholly misdirected. | |||||
