内容記述 The Bildungsroman describes an issue through a life of a person and his growth: How can “individual”, who is isolated as “personal”, find out a goal or a way of its life in “social reality”? In the paper, we closely discuss how heroes in the Bildungsroman confront the difficulties in their lives. On the basis of the argument, we categorize the works into groups as follows: (1) The confrontation between “individual” and “social reality” settles harmoniously. (Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship by Goethe) (2) The harmonious settlement of the confrontation between “individual” and “social reality” is difficult. i. The hero suffers a setback. (Green Heinrich by Keller, the first version) ii. “Restrictions” or “resignations” are emphasized as “unavoidable” in face of the settlement. (Green Heinrich by Keller, the second version) (3) “Individual” settles to the inside of itself, separated from “social reality” which has become too chaotic to survey. After acquiring the philosophy of humanity there by itself, “individual” then contrasts its own philosophy with “social reality”. (Indian Summer by Stifter, The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann) We argue the correlation between the Bildungsroman and its readers concerning the settlement of the problem, and claim, on the basis of a work by Michael Ende, that the Bildungsroman has an important role to build characters of its readers.
