| 内容記述 | The purpose of this paper is to discuss what kind of program is suitable as part of “Japanese Culture and Society Studies（JCSS）”for the foreign students in the Faculty of Policy Studies at Nanzan University, in order that the students will develop Japanese language proficiency required to pursue the standard academic program at Nanzan. First, I review the trends in the ways in which different institutions have integrated JCSS in their Japanese programs in the last 20 years. Then, I describe the curriculum of our Japanese program and discuss what type of JCSS may be suitable in our Faculty. Unilateral impartation of knowledge on Japan and teaching differences between Japan and the other cultures used to be the methods common in JCSS. However, in the late 1980’s, the importance of intercultural learning and the reciprocal process of cross-cultural interaction started receiving attention. In our Faculty, foreign students are required to take some regular classes with Japanese students in addition to the Japanese classes from their freshman year in order to graduate university in ４ years. As such, it is not feasible to squeeze in separate JCSS classes or Intercultural/Transcultural Education in our curriculum. Therefore, an alternate model is required for our program. | |||||
