It is concluded that the origin of the physical properties peculiar to the tension wood is attributable to the physical properties of the gelatinous layer. It is concluded that the origin of the physical properties peculiar to the tension wood is attributable to the physical properties of the gelatinous layer. 引割あて材にみられる大きな引割の成長応力、軸方向ヤング率、軸方向収縮率についてそれらの発生に及ぼすゼラチン層の寄与を検討した。65年生のケヤキ(Zelkova serata Makino)について木部表面成長応力解放ひずみを測定し、その後測定点近傍から採取したブロックの軸方向ヤング率、軸方向収縮率を測定した。また、光学顕微鏡観察に基づいて木部繊維領域に占めるゼラチン繊維の個数割合とゼラチン層の面積率を測定し、複合則を用いてゼラチン層の物性を推定した。その結果、以下のことが明らかになった。(1) 生材状態でのゼラチン層の軸方向ヤング率は木化層の1.46倍もしくはそれ以上である。(2) 軸方向成長応力解放ひずみは木化層の23.6倍に達する。(3) 軸方向収縮率は木化層の30.8倍になる。以上は引張あて材にみられる種々の特異な物性はゼラチン層の性質によるものであることを示している。
