To answer this question, I took 13 silk-weaving enterprises in Pak Thong Chi District of Nakhonrachasima Province, Thailand as a case study and examined the role of one large buyer called Jim Thompson.  In-depth interviews with the managers of 13 silk-weaving enterprises who were former subcontractors of Jim Thompson revealed that Jim Thompson played an important role in upgrading these enterprises.  After these 13 enterprises became subcontractors of Jim Thompson, they were able to upgrade their products and production processes.  In order to ensure a sufficient supply of quality products, Jim Thompson established mechanisms which helped its subcontractors to enhance their production capacity.
