| 内容記述 | This study examines the conversational usages of Japanese contrastive connective “demo (but)” in conversation. Drawing on conversation analysis (CA), a micro-analytic approach to talk-in-interaction, I aim to explore how “demo” functions when it is used in a specific action during a specific activity; namely, in a response to the telling of one’s trouble. Specifically, I focus on the cases in which “demo” is placed before understanding or empathy towards the teller of the trouble is expressed. Whi4le “demo (but)” is syntactically categorized as a contrastive connective, its function to connect two sentential elementsis not fully kept when it is used before the indication of an alignment with a previous speaker, such as understanding or empathy. The analysis revealed that “demo,” when usedduring the telling of a trouble, manages the progressivity of conversation as well as the sensitivity of the talk that telling of a trouble causes. This study demonstrates the importance of examining the use of connectives in relation to the actions it achieves as well as the ongoing activity in which it is used. | |||||
