| 内容記述 | This paper investigates the social desirability of free entry in a small open economy with a vertically linked industry consisting of the upstream and downstream sectors. The downstream sector is a single competitive sector of production, but the upstream sector comprises a large number of horizontally differentiated sub-sectors each of which produces the non-tradable, homogeneous intermediate good under Cournot oligopoly. In the economy, there exists the other industry producing the competitive good. Under these assumptions, it is shown that if the free entry and exit of upstream firms is allowed, the economy completely specializes in the vertically linked industry or the other. To analyze the social desirability of free entry, we focus on the case in which production takes place only in the vertically linked industry. In this case, it is demonstrated that under a certain condition, free entry in the upstream sector can lead to a socially insufficient number of firms. This is in sharp contrast with the previous findings that the number of firms entering is socially excessive under Cournot oligopoly with a single consumption good. | |||||
