内容記述 Chomsky (2013, 2015) proposes the Labeling Algorithm (LA), arguing that syntactic objects (SO) created by the syntactic operation Merge should be assigned appropriate labels so that they can be interpreted at interfaces. Along this line, Chomsky (2013, 2015) presents an LA-based account of the EPP and the that-trace effect in languages like English. According to his account, the subject, particularly the external argument (EA), must not stay in situ because otherwise it wouldbe impossible to label an SO consisting of EA and vP.
Languages like English are different from those like Spanish and Greek, in that it is only in the former that EA must move to the preverbal position and the that-trace effect is observed. Interestingly, it has been reported that the that-trace effect was not observed in some periods of early English.
The main purpose of this paper is to propose an LA-based account of the cross-linguistic variation of movement of EA and the diachronic variation of the that-trace effect. This paper attributes the two variations to the presence/absence of verbal movement to T and the richness of verbal inflection, extending the assumption made by Hayashi (2020) as to feature inheritance and affix hopping. Adopting Tozawa’s (2015) analysis, this paper assumes that minimal search selects v as the label of the SO consisting of EA and vP.
