However, most of the lectures tend to disseminate knowledge to students without providing the opportunity to understand the process of how it is generated. ‘Field work’ is the very process which generates knowledge in educational anthropology. But many of undergraduate lectures focus on the knowledge itself which is the “result” rather than the “process”. The authors designed and delivered a lecture course of educational anthropology which includes introductions of field work experiences. This study examined how students in the course built the concept of ‘field work’ through out the course. Field work experiences in Indonesia, Cambodia and Lebanon were introduced by three Ph.D. students. Reaction papers by the students were qualitatively analyzed in order to find how they understood “field work” and subsequently developed a concept and their own image of field work through the course. The authors discovered that even though the students had little knowledge of ‘field work’ before the course, they gradually developed concrete images about it by observing and listening to the Ph. D. students’ field work experiences. They recognized the importance of field work as well as its difficulties, coming to understand the field workers’ zeal while reflecting on their own challenges.
