Analyses are based on observations and interviews conducted by the author at Sudbury Valley School in Massachusetts, U.S.A. Background and purpose of this research are described, followed by a description of the current situation of free schools in Japan. Then an overview of Sudbury Valley School (SVS) is given, in terms of (1) history and environment, (2) school size, entrance, curriculum, graduation, etc., (3) school management and democracy focused on freedom, responsibility, and punishment, and (4) publications. Then the discussion enters into analysis of cultural characteristics of SVS, based on the author’s field notes, i.e. (1) acceptance of visitors and the rules by which they must abide, (2) esteem for mutual respect and trust, and integration of learning; through observations of rooms in the main building, (3) significance of punishment in SVS through the observation of the Judicial Committee, (4) learning and its reality through a case in which newspaper interviewed and photographed the author, (5) conflict with the general image of development through an interview with a parent, (6) fundraising activities shown through the case of the Music Corporation, (7) fundraising activities and socio-economic aspects of education, (8) socio-economic aspects of education and socio-cultural characteristics of teachers, (9) cultural differences in comparison with general schools illustrated by a case of transfer to a public school, (10) students’ activities and utilization of the Internet, (11) principles of freedom and self-responsibility as cultural background, through interviews with a schoolboy and a staff member, (12) the question whether this is a school or not, through an interview with a schoolgirl.
