First-grade children (ages 6-7) were interviewed about episodes in which they were praised, the emotions they felt at those times, and also why they felt those emotions. Analysis 1 offered specifics on increases of motivation, the degree of fun of the task, and competence, based on narrative data. Increased motivation appeared in such comments as, “I would like to get a perfect score on the test, again” or “I will practice harder so that I can do better next time ”. High feelings of competence were shown in remarks such as “I was praised because I was able write Kanji neatly ”, “I was praised because I was able to ride bicycle”. In analysis 2, narratives were analyzed by classifying the children’s emotional reactions.
