Today in Japan, the notion of “curriculum management” has attracted attention from the perspectives of both policy and practice. It is not, however, without criticism, often accused of being difficult to apply successfully in actual school settings. Although previous studies have examined the determinants of “curriculum management,” to have limited results, they have failed to sufficiently analyze the process through which “curriculum management” may achieve its potential. This paper provides an analysis of the processes by which “curriculum management” can encourage a positive outcome in an actual school, Shima Elementary School. First, a background summary of “curriculum management” is described followed by an explanation of how it was conceived. Then, a focus on lesson study development illustrates how the curriculum was transformed. Finally, through the concrete example of Shima Elementary School as a case study, the determinants of “curriculum management” is clarified.
